Part A (I got this part): The decibel level of the noise from a jet aircraft is 130 dB when measured 24.7 m from the aircraft. How much sound power does the jet aircraft emit? Answer in units of W. (I got 76666.17 W) Part B: How much sound power would strike the eardrum of an airport worker 24.7 m from the aircraft? Assume the diameter of the worker

Answer #1

Power you got = 76666.17 W
Intensity = P/4*pi*R^2
I = 76666.17/4*3.14*24.7^2
I = 10.005 W/m2
(b)
Sound power striking worker eardrum is
P = I∙A
= 10.005W/m² ∙ 1.7×10⁻²m²
= 0.17W

    A 25 MW jet engine produces a sound level of 120 dB, the threshold of pain, at 100 m from the engine. (Recall that the threshold of human hearing is 1 x 10-12 W/m2.) To understand the decibel scale. The decibel scale is a logarithmic scale for measuring the sound intensity level. Because the decibel scale is logarithmic, it changes by an additive constant when the intensity as measured in W/m2 changes by a multiplicative factor. The number of decibels increases by 10 for a factor of 10 increase in intensity. The general formula for the sound intensity level, in decibels, corresponding to intensity I is β=10log(II0)dB, where I0 is a reference intensity. For...

    A new airport is being built 650 meters away from a school. The noise level 50 meters away from planes that will land at the airport is 140 dB. In open space between the airport and the school, noise level decreases by 15 dB each time the distance increases tenfold. How far away would the school have to be moved to make the sound manageable? Give at least 2 options to reconcile the issue without moving the school or airport?
