For any of the designs for the SCBA air cylinder for Problems 1, 2, or 3, make a sketch of the complete tank by placing hemispherical heads on each end. Show a port at one end for attaching the pressure regulator and discharge device. Assuming that the wall thickness of the heads is the same as the wall thickness of the cylindrical portion, compute the approximate weight of the complete tank.

Problem 1

Design a cylindrical pressure vessel to carry compressed air for a self-contained breathing apparatus for use by firefighters when operating in smoke-filled buildings. The minimum inside diameter is to be 6.00 in and the length of the cylindrical portion of the tank is to be 15.0 in. It must withstand a service pressure of 450 psi. Use a design stress of su/8 to account for a large number of pressurization cycles. Also, check the final design for its ability to withstand a maximum pressure of 900 psi by computing the design factor based on yield strength. The tank is to be made from aluminum alloy 6061-T6. Compute the weight of just the cylindrical portion.

Problem 2

Repeat Problem 1 but use titanium Ti-6A1-4V.

Problem 3

Repeat Problem 1 but use stainless steel 17-4PH H900.
