For the following computer problem, any appropriate software may be used. Input prompts should fully explain what is required of the user (the program should be user-friendly). The resulting output should be well labeled and self-explanatory.

Write a program that will allow a user to input the initial and final diameters and gage length for a tension test specimen along with a specified number of load-elongation combinations. The program should then calculate the stress and strain for each data set as well as the percent reduction in area. Use the program to check the calculations of Problem.

Problem

For the following problem, unless noted otherwise refer to Appendices F and G for necessary mechanical properties of materials.

The data from the tension test of a steel specimen are given in Table. The gage length was 2.000 in. and the original diameter was 0.505 in. The final diameter was 0.397 in. Calculate stress and strain at each point and draw the stress–strain diagram. Estimate the value of the modulus of elasticity, upper and lower yield points, ultimate strength, rupture strength, and percent reduction in area. (Hint: Draw a second curve exaggerating the strain scale for the first eight points. See Figure 10-3.)
