As you learned earlier, in many UNIX/Linux systems, the device special files are contained in the /dev folder. In this project, you examine the contents of that folder using Fedora 13 Linux (but the same command can be used in many versions of UNIX/Linux).

To view the files in the /dev folder:

1. Access the command line, such as by clicking Applications, pointing to System Tools, and clicking Terminal in Fedora Linux with the GNOME desktop.

2. Type ls /dev |more and press Enter. (The more command enables you to view the file listing a screen at a time.) Figure 6-20 illustrates the first screen of the listing of files.

3. Press the spacebar to scroll through each screen and record examples of files that you see on your system and record a few examples. (Note that you can press q at any time to exit the listing and go back to the command prompt.)

4. If you are using the command prompt from a terminal window, type exit and press Enter to close the window.
