Professional certification and licensure. In my view, the purpose of an accounting degree is not to prepare you to take any particular certification/license exam; the purpose of an accounting degree is to teach you to think like an accountant. But, many accounting professionals enjoy both the challenge and recognition associated with obtaining a professional license or certification. Many such certifications are available, including Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant,

Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Information Systems Auditor, Enrolled Agent, Certified Government Financial Manager. In consultation with your AIS professor, choose one or more of those credentials; respond to the following questions about it.

a. Is the credential a license or a certificate?

b. What are the steps associated with obtaining the credential?

c. What topics are included in the credential’s professional exam? How do those topics align with your university studies?

d. What organization sponsors/offers the credential?

e. Does the sponsoring organization have a local chapter in your area? If so, arrange to attend one of its meetings.

f. Summarize the sponsoring organization’s code of ethics, if it has one.

g. Look online or in a newspaper for job listings that seem related to the credential. Make a list of the companies, job titles, responsibilities, and (if available) salaries for each position you locate.
