How did Bechterev’s method of studying conditioned reflexes differ from Pavlov’s?

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Pavlov worked on conditioned reflexes, while working on and studying the digestive processes in different animals. According to him, the responses from organisms come in terms of conditioned and unconditioned reflexes only. He even introduced the concept of cortical mosaic.

Bechterev supported Pavlov in terms of objective psychology but penned down his own views as reflexology. While studying human behavior, his main objective was to figure out the relationship between overt behavior and environmental influences. Though Pavlov and Sechenov have their own contributions but Bechterev thought himself as the originator of behaviorism.

Bechterev and Pavlov both did extensive work on objective psychology, and more specifically, on conditioned reflexes at around same time. Pavlov gave his results in terms of conditioned reflex and Bechterev did it in the name of association reflex.

Both worked on primarily the same area but criticized each other’s working methodology. Bechterev’s work on overt behavior proved to be more relevant, but Pavlov’s association with Watson gave him fame.
