When fields were treated with grasses like rye, so that they decay in the soil before growing corn, did not give good yield of corn. On the other hand growing legume plants like Monantha, vetch, hairy vetch or Austrian peas before growing corn gave very good yields.

Thus, treating the soil with legumes gave the best yield and treating it with grass like rye gave the worst yield.
