and

D = B − C.

If D is not O, then you have verified that scalar mul­tiplication by a positive integer and successive addition are not the same in your computing environment. (It is not unusual that D ≠ O, since many computing envi­ronments use only a “model” of exact arithmetic, called floating-point arithmetic.)
