In this hands-on project, you remotely administer a partner’s computer using X Windows.

1. Switch to a command-line terminal (tty2) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 and log in to the terminal using the user name of root and the password of secret.

2. Edit the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file with a text editor such as vi and add the following line under the [Security] section:

DisallowTCP=false

When finished, save your changes and quit the editor.

3. At the command prompt, type reboot and press Enter to reboot your system.

4. Once your system has rebooted, log into the GNOME Desktop Environment as sample user one with the password secret.

5. Perform Steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 on your partner’s computer.

6. Open a BASH shell terminal within the GNOME Desktop Environment on your computer.

7. At the command prompt, type xhost + and press Enter.

8. At the command prompt, type ssh root@IP_address and press Enter, where IP_address is the IPv4 address of your partner’s computer. Supply the root user password of secret when prompted.

9. At the remote shell prompt, type export DISPLAY=’IP_address:0.0’ and press Enter, where IP_address is the IPv4 address of your computer.

10. At the remote shell prompt, type system-config-network& and press Enter. Examine the configuration of the network interfaces on the Devices tab. Can you confirm that you are using the Network Configuration tool from your partner’s computer?

11. Close all windows and log out of the GNOME Desktop Environment.
