Al Qaeda attacks on the United States. Refer to the Studies in Conflict&Terrorism (Vol. 29, 2006) analysis of incidents involving suicide terrorist attacks, presented in Exercise. Data on the number of individual suicide bombings or attacks for each in a sample of 21 incidents involving an attack against the United States by the Al Qaeda terrorist group (see table below) are saved in the ALQAEDA file.

a. Find the mean and standard deviation of the sample data.

b. Describe the population from which the sample is selected.

c. Use the information from part a to find a 90% confidence interval for the mean μ of the population.

d. Give a practical interpretation of the result you obtained in part c.

e. In repeatedly sampling, where intervals similar to the one computed in part c are generated, what proportion of the intervals will enclose the true value of μ?

Based on Moghadam, A. “Suicide terrorism, occupation, and the globalization of martyrdom: A critique of Dying to Win.” Studies in Conflict&Terrorism, Vol. 29, No. 8, 2006 (Table).

Al Qaeda attacks on the United States. An article in Studies in Conflict&Terrorism (Vol. 29, 2006) conducted an empirical analysis of incidents involving suicide terrorist attacks. The data in the table that follows are the number of individual suicide bombings or attacks for each in a sample of 21 incidents involving an attack against the United States by the Al Qaeda terrorist group. (For example, the infamous September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda attack involved four separate attacks with hijacked airplanes: Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, one battered into the Pentagon, and a fourth plane shattered in a field in Pennsylvania.) Summarize the data (saved in the ALQAEDA file) with a dot plot. Interpret the results.
