What is approval voting? pg. 171 What are the advantages of approval voting over the other voting methods? pg. 171

Reference:

The Arrow impossibility theorem tells us that there is no perfect voting system. Even when voters rank their preferences of all the candidates, every voting system will occasionally produce an objectionable result. Even though no voting system is perfect, we can still explore other selection processes that may make the objectionable outcomes more rare or more acceptable.

Approval voting is a method in which each voter casts votes for all the candidates he or she approves of. The voters are not forced to rank the candidates and are allowed to vote for more than one candidate. Some voters may still vote for only one candidate, while others may vote for most, or even all, of the candidates. The candidate receiving the greatest number of approval votes is the winner.

One advantage of approval voting is that the method can be implemented with ordinary ballots and voting equipment. Approval voting is also easily adaptable to a situation in which more than one candidate is to be selected. For instance, if two candidates are to be selected, approval voting selects the two candidates with the largest vote totals (a method for handling ties will have to be determined).
