Decade Volcanoes, Part I
The Decade Volcano initiative is part of a United Nations program aimed at better utilizing science and emergency management to reduce the severity of natural disasters by directing attention to a small subset of active volcanoes around the world. By studying this set of volcanoes, science and land-use planning teams are attempting to learn the best ways to reduce the risks to life and property from volcano-related hazards everywhere. Answer the following question, using the volcanoes illustrated on the map. It may be useful to review a map of plate boundaries (see Chapter 4 Snapshot) before attempting to answer the questions.
a) Underline five volcanoes that formed above subduction zones of five different plates.
b) Are any of these volcanoes associated with a present-day divergent plate boundary? Yes __ No ___
c) Name a volcano that generates low-viscosity magma. ___________________
d) Other than Mauna Loa, which volcano is most likely to have formed above a hot spot? ___________________
