Alzheimer’s gene study. Scientists have already discovered two genes (on chromosomes 19 and 21) that mutate to cause the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Science News (July 8,1995) reported on a search for a third gene that causes Alzheimer’s. An international team of scientists gathered genetic information from 21 families afflicted by the early-onset form of the disease. In 6 of these families, mutations in the S182 gene on chromosome 14 accounted for the early onset of Alzheimer’s.

a. Consider a family afflicted by the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Find the approximate probability that the researchers will discover mutations in the S182 gene on chromosome 14 for this family.

b. Discuss the reliability of the probability you found in part a. How could a more accurate estimate of the probability be obtained?
