Problem 11-19* A light office building (Fig. 11-15) is supported on footings with three different plan areas. The smallest footings support corner columns; the largest, interior columns; and the intermediate-size footings, exterior wall columns. The loads to be supported are given in Table 11-11. The soil profile, including unit weight, index properties for the clay and SPT blow counts are given in Fig. 11-15. For the clay layer, Cc = 0.28 and OCR = 1. The initial void ratio at the middle of the clay layer is equal to 0.9.
(a) Considering both immediate and consolidation settlement, proportion the footings such that the angular distortion between every pair of footing is no greater than 1/300. Assume that the total settlement will be accommodated by architectural solutions so long as it does not exceed 150 mm.
(b) Estimate the evolution of the settlements of the three classes of footings with time.
(c) Check the three types of footings for limit-bearing capacity failure using both the WSD and the LRFD approaches.

Table 11-11 Loads for Problem 11-19
Column | Dead load (kN) | Live load (kN) |
Corner columns | 450 | 530 |
Exterior wall columns | 550 | 620 |
Interior columns | 650 | 730 |
