Jail suicide study. In Exercise 2.190 (p. 101) you considered data on suicides in correctional facilities. The data were published in the American Journal of Psychiatry (July 1995). The researchers wanted to know what factors increase the risk of suicide by those incarcerated in urban jails. The data on 37 suicides that occurred in Wayne County Jail, Detroit, Michigan, are saved in the SUICIDE file. Answer each of the questions that follow, using a 95% confidence interval for the target parameter implied in the question. Interpret each confidence interval fully.

a. What proportion of suicides at the jail are committed by inmates charged with murder or manslaughter?

b. What proportion of suicides at the jail are committed at night?

c. What is the average length of time an inmate is in jail before committing suicide?

d. What percentage of suicides are committed by white inmates?

Risk of jail suicides. Suicide is the leading cause of death of Americans incarcerated in correctional facilities. To determine what factors increase the risk of suicide in urban jails, a group of researchers collected data on all 37 suicides that occurred over a 15-year period in the Wayne County Jail in Detroit, Michigan (American Journal of Psychiatry, July 1995). The data on each suicide victim are saved in the SUICIDE file. Selected observations are shown in the table at the top of page 102.

a. Identify the type (quantitative or qualitative) of each variable measured.

b. Are suicides at the jail more likely to be committed by inmates charged with murder/manslaughter or with lesser crimes? Illustrate with a graph.

Based on DuRand, C. J., et al. “A quarter century of suicide in a major urban jail: Implications for community psychiatry.” American Journal of Psychiatry, Vol. 152, No. 7, July 1995, p. 1078 (Table).

c. Are suicides at the jail more likely to be committed at night? Illustrate with a graph.

d. What is the mean length of time an inmate is in jail before committing suicide? What is the median? Interpret these two numbers.

e. Is it likely that a future suicide at the jail will occur after 200 days? Explain.

f. Have suicides at the jail declined over the years? Support your answer with a graph.
