Topical Questions
These questions are keyed to the major topics in the chapter. Usually a question that is answered at the back of this book is paired with a similar one that is not.
Consider the transformation of butane into 2-methylpropane (see Question 60). The system is originally at equilibrium at 25 °C in a 1.0-L sealed flask with [butane] = 0.010 M and [2-methylpropane] = 0.025 M. Suppose that 0.0050 mol of 2- methylpropane is suddenly added to the flask, and the system shifts to a new equilibrium.
(a) What is the new equilibrium concentration of each gas?
(b) Make a graph like the one in Figure 14.6 to show howthe concentrations of the isomers change when the 2 methylpropane is added.
