Conceptual Challenge Problems

These rigorous, thought-provoking problems integrate conceptual learning with problem solving and are suitable for group work.

CP6.D (Section 6.4) During one of your chemistry classes a student asks the professor, “Why does hot water freeze more quickly than cold water?”

(a) What do you expect the professor to say in answer to the student’s question?

(b) In one experiment, two 100.-g samples of water were placed in identical containers on the same surface 10. Cm apart in a room at -25 °C. One sample had an initial temperature of 78 °C, while the second was at 24 °C. The second sample took 151 min to freeze, and the first took 166 min (only 10% longer) to freeze. Clearly the cooler sample froze more quickly, but not nearly as quickly as one might have expected. How can this be so?
