A coupling joins two shafts of diameter d (Figure P6.13). The bolts are tightened so that there is no slipping between the two halves of the coupling. The diameter D of the bolts is small compared to R and the shear stress on the cross-sectional area of each bolt is uniformly distributed. Derive a formula relating torque T, radius R of the bolt circle, average shear stress τ on the cross-sectional area A of each bolt, the number n of bolts, and the diameter D of each bolt. Ignore friction between the two coupling plates.
