A 24 in. standard 1-beam has a width of flange of 7 in. and a moment of inertia of 2087.2 in.4 It is reinforced on the top and bottom by a 1 × 10 in. plate. If the shearing force at the cross section is 100,000 lb, find the shearing force per longitudinal inch at the interface between the flange and plate. When this is known, the designer can then arrange suitable welding or rivet spacing between flange and plate to carry the shearing force.
