Rowing Speed See Exercise. Estimate the speed of a boat with an eightperson crew.
(Modeling) Windchill InExercises 1–4, we used a table to give windchill for various combinations of temperature and wind speed. The National Weather Service uses the formula
Windchill temperature = 35.74 + .6215T + 35.75V16 + .4275TV16
where T is the temperature in oF and V is the wind speed in miles per hour, to calculate windchill. (Source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Weather Service.)
Rowing Speed Olympic rowing events have one-, two-, four-, or eight-person crews, with each person pulling a single oar. Increasing the size of the crew increases the speed of the boat. An analysis of 1980 Olympic rowing events concluded that the approximate speed, s, of the boat (in feet per second) was given by the formula
where n is the number of oarsmen. Estimate the speed of a boat with a four-person crew. (Source: Townend, M. Stewart, Mathematics in Sport, Chichester, Ellis Horwood Limited, 1984.)
Exercise 1
Wind at 15 mph with a 30°F temperature and wind at 10 mph with a –10˚ F temperature
Exercise 2
wind at 20 mph with a 20˚ F temperature and wind at 5 mph with a 30˚ F temperature
Exercise 3
wind at 30 mph with a -30˚ F temperature and wind at 15 mph with a -20˚ F temperature
Exercise 4
wind at 40 mph with a 40˚ F temperature and wind at 25 mph with a -30˚ F temperature
