A vacuum tower used to process residual oil experienced severe coking (carbon formation) on the tower internals when it rained. Coking occurs because the temperature of the fluid gets to be too high. The temperature of the entering residual was controlled by a temperature recorder-controller (TRC) connected to a thermocouple inserted into a thermowell in the pipeline bringing the residual into the column. The TRC was showing 700°F whereas the interior of the column was at 740°F (too hot). What might be the problem?
