In this project, you use the Computer Management tool to view the resources available for sharing on a computer running Windows XP/Vista/7, Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2. This project works best if you have one or more shared drives already set up, and one or more clients accessing those drives. Also, use an account that has Administrator privileges.

To view the resources in use:

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer (in Windows XP or Server 2003/Server 2003 R2) or Computer (in Windows Vista/XP), and click Manage. In Windows Server 2008/ Server 2008 R2, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Computer Management.

2. Notice the options in the left pane. What kinds of tasks can be accomplished through the Computer Management tool?

3. Double-click Shared Folders in the tree (under System Tools), if needed, to display the items under Shared Folders.

4. Double-click Shares in the tree. Notice that the middle (or right pane in Windows XP/ Server 2003) displays the drives and folders that are shared from your computer (see Figure 11-19).

5. In the tree, click Sessions to view the users connected to a share on your computer.

6. Click Open Files in the tree to view the files that have been opened by a client.

7. Close the Computer Management tool.
