Germany was defeated at the end of World War II. At the Yalta Conference in February 1945 and again at the Potsdam conference in July and August 1945, it was decided that Germany would be divided into zones in order to eliminate Germany as a superpower. A portion of Germany would go to each of Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States. Berlin, which was part of the Soviet Union’s zone, had to be set aside as a fifth piece and subdivided in order to achieve a fair settlement. Research this postwar division of Germany. What made the division so difficult? How were negotiations carried out? Was the process used similar to one of the fair-division procedures you have learned? How were the final divisions made? Sketch the final dividing lines on the following maps of Germany and Berlin, and summarize your findings in a report.
