In this hands-on project, you monitor system performance statistics taken from previous days using the sar utility included in the sysstat package.

1. Switch to a command-line terminal (tty2) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 and log in to the terminal using the user name of root and the password of secret.

2. At the command prompt, type cd /var/log/sa and press Enter to change to the directory that contains recorded performance statistics.

3. Next, type ls at the command prompt and press Enter. What files are available? What are their filenames? Which files in this directory are safe to view using a text utility? Which file contains binary system statistics for the current day? Use a piece of paper to record the name of a file that contains binary system statistics for a previous day.

4. At the command prompt, type sar -q –f FILE1 | less and press Enter, where FILE1 is the first filename recorded in Step 3. Scroll through the output. How many measurements were taken and when? Was your computer rebooted during that day? How can you tell? When finished, press q to quit the less utility.

5. Type exit and press Enter to log out of your shell.
