Comparisons of Beam Behavior. Compare the behavior of the four beams shown in Figure 1 with regard to shearing force, bending moment, and maximum deflection. In each case, the beam is designed to support a uniformly distributed load across a given span. Complete the analysis in a manner similar to that used in Example Problems 1 through 5.

Problem 1

For the shaft in Problem 6  compute the deflection if the ends are fixed against rotation instead of simply supported.

Problem 2

For the shaft in Problem 6 compute the deflection if the shaft is 350 nun long rather than 700 mm.

Problem 3

For the shaft in Problem 6  compute the deflection if the diameter is 25 mm instead of 32 mm.

Problem 4

For the shaft in Problem 6  compute the deflection if the load is placed 175 mm from the left support rather than in the center. Compute the deflection both at the load and at the center of the shaft.

Problem 5

A wide-flange steel beam, W12 × 16, carries the load shown in Figure 2  Compute the deflection at the loads and at the center of the beam.

FIGURE 2

Problem 6

A round shaft having a diameter of 32 mm is 700 mm long and carries a 3.0-kN load at its center. If the shaft is steel and simply supported at its ends, compute the deflection at the center.
