Install and Use a Web Cam

A Web cam is a digital video camera that allows you to capture video and still images. The videos can be used in live instant messages or for live images over the Internet. Recordings of the videos can be included on Web pages or in e-mail messages as attachments. In addition, some cameras include software that enables you to establish a visual security environment where the camera can be used to detect and record movement in its general vicinity.

Using a Web cam requires two phases: 1) purchasing and installing the Web cam, and 2) using the Web cam to transmit live video or to record video or digital images.

To purchase and install a Web cam, complete the following steps:

1. Determine how you want to use the camera in order to decide the quality of camera you require and the camera software you need. Web cams range in price from about $25 to more than $125, and vary in picture quality, features, and accompanying software. If you are not sure of all features and prices, search the Web to determine the best camera for your use.

2. After making your purchase, you will find that most cameras are accompanied by an optical disc containing the software that enables the camera to communicate and work with the computer. Often, the instructions with the device will specify that you should place the optical disc in an optical disc drive and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software on the computer.

3. After the software is installed, you likely will be instructed to connect the camera to the computer. You do so by connecting the USB or FireWire cable first to the camera and then to a USB or FireWire port on your computer. When the camera is connected, you will be able to start the camera software from either the All Programs list or the desktop.

Once you have started the camera software, you will be able to use the camera for any of the tasks you require. Each camera and its accompanying software will allow you to create a video, use instant messaging to send live video to your instant messaging contacts, and other uses as well. In addition, you often will be able to control the quality of your video output by modifying brightness, contrast, and clarity. With many cameras, you will be able to zoom in and out and, from your keyboard, enter commands to move the camera lens left, right, up, and down.

On some cameras, you can use a feature called face tracking, where the camera will remain focused on your face even when you move. This feature allows you to be more natural and not be concerned with always making sure you are placed exactly right for the camera. As you can see, once you have purchased and installed a Web cam, you will open an entirely new world of communications right from your computer.

Optional: Purchase a Web cam or borrow one from a friend. Install the camera software on a computer. Warning: If you are using a computer that is not your own, complete this exercise only with the owner’s permission. Connect the camera to the computer. Practice with the camera and the accompanying software. What features does the software provide? Which feature do you find the most compelling? Which features could you do without? Record a video of yourself answering these questions. Submit the video to your instructor.
