Why did applied psychology develop under functionalism and not under structuralism?
The school of structuralism denied the use of the application of psychological knowledge to real life issues. While the functionalists had no problem with involving psychology to real world problems.
Carr and other notable functionalist discussed that psychology includes study on infants, people, children, and people with mental disorders. Functionalist applied various methods to conduct their research. They applied questionnaires, objective and physiological researches to their experiments.
Also, the functionalists included the study of animal behavior, which later became an essential part of psychology. After, the death of Wundt and Titchener, structuralism met with its downfall and the functionalist movement was carried forward.
Functionalism left its mark on the American psychology. Psychology afterwards developed keeping in mind the basics of the functionalist movement. The application of psychology in treating the real life problem is the landmark step taken by the functionalist to overshadow structuralism.
