Population with high number of young individuals as compared to the older organisms is increasing or progressive type and the pyramid of such population would have a broader base.
On the other hand, if the number of older organisms is more than the younger ones, the population is said to be retrogressive or declining type. The base of the pyramid of such population would be narrow.
