An IgE-mediated skin reaction occurs within minutes of exposure to the antigen and it is a wheal and flare reaction with fluid in the tissues, rather like a mosquito bite. A positive delayed hypersensitivity reaction is not visible until hours after exposure to the antigen, and it peaks at 2 to 3 days. It is thickened (indurated) and reddened but there is no fluid in the tissues.
