The RAS (reticular activating system) present in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) promote arousal by releasing certain polypeptide neurotransmitters.
Lesions of this region is often associated with the sleep disorders such as “narcolepsy” in which the person fall asleep during the day time. Thus, damage to the LHA impairs the RAS and may lead to deep sleep or coma.
