The Middle Ages are referred to the time starting from the 5th century Anno Domini (AD) to the 13th century AD. The beginning of the middle Ages is referred to as the Dark Ages.

The Dark Ages concept was developed by an Italian scholar called Petrarch in the 1330’s. He referred to the time between the fall of the Roman Empire and the High Middle Ages as the Dark Ages, that is, the time between 5 to 6th centuries to 11 to 13th century.

There was total lawlessness throughout most of Europe. Roman reign had collapsed and along with it, the Roman law of society perished. During these centuries, local or Germanic customs prevailed from towns to villages, with each village armed against possible attacks from surrounding villages or foreign enemies.

The paradigm in the middle Ages was as follows:

1. Paradigm of the middle Ages is referred to the mystic mindset of the people and society. There were lack of proper education among the common masses with only some priests, monks and the noble people getting education.

2. There was little progress is Literature, Arts, Science, Philosophy. Along with this, the Church became highly powerful and was often charged with the mistreatment of civilians.

3. People thought to be believers or heretics, and the heretics were dealt with very harshly. The Church also became corrupt, owning vast properties, controlling kings and running large businesses even organized prostitution.

People of the middle Ages believed in prophecies, dark forces and the use of magic. The fear, beliefs, dreams and magical instances were thought to be true and people lived by believing in them.

5. Some anomalies may have existed in understanding the middle Ages as future Christian writers portray them. The tagging of the Middle Ages as “Dark” is often due to the lack of resources (books, articles, literature, and scientific writings).

As there are no available work pools of that period, it is thought that those centuries were characterized by lack of intellect and education. Further, there was the mystic belief of people regarding supernatural events, magic, sorcery, which leads to such negative thinking.
