Figure shows a PERT chart used by a development team tasked with the design of a mobile phone running on firmware (machine-level, binary software). The unit, when manufactured and ready for sale, is to be shipped with an internal help file. Once the specifications have been set, the PERT chart divides into three distinct pathways—one related to hardware, one to the software, and one to the documentation. The critical pathway in this project runs from node 1 to node 2, and then via nodes 3, 5, 6, 8, and 7 to the final node 11, for a total time allocation of 2 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 4 = 20 weeks.
