In winter, fresh air is needed in an office building to maintain air quality. Engineers propose a system that will mix the fresh air with recirculated air from the building before heating the air in order to reduce heating loads. The outside air is 30°F with a relative humidity of 70%, and 10 ft3/s of this air is needed. The inside air to be mixed with the outside air before heating is at 80°F and a relative humidity of 30%, and has a volumetric flow rate of 8 ft3/s. The mixed stream is then to be heated and humidified and then returned to the building at 73°F and a relative humidity of 50%. The whole system is maintained at 1 atm. Determine the heating load for (a) the outside air alone, and (b) the mixed stream of outside and interior air. The humidification is to occur with cool water, so do not be concerned about the energy requirements involved in humidification. Is it more or less energy intensive to heat the mixed stream as opposed to the fresh air alone?
