A very long straight wire lies along the z axis and carries a current of 200 A in the positive z direction. What is the y component of the magnetic field that this wire produces at the point x = 3.00 m, y = 4.00 m, z = 0 (in μT)? BE CAREFUL-The common wrong answers are also listed.

Answer #1

Distance of the point from wire

d = sqrt ( 3 ^2 + 4^2) = 5 m

Field due to infinite straight current carrying wire

B = (uo/ 4pi) 2 i / d

B = (4 pi x 10^-7/4 pi) x 2 x 200/5 = 8 uT (D)
