Answer #1
The averaging performed by repeatedly applying a 3*3 lowpass spatial filter removes some of the higher frequency features, while allowing the low-frequencyfeatures to “pass” through the filter unchanged (thus the term “low pass” filter). This has the effect of smoothing the raster image, emphasizing itslarger-scale brightness trends. Whether the smoothing produced by the low pass filter is beneficial or not depends on the characteristics of the inputimage. If the high frequency features represent introduced “noise” that detracts from the overall image quality, the low-pass smoothing will improve theimage. However, smoothing may also blurr edges, degrade useful image detail, and reduce contrast.
