A beam of white light goes from air into water at an incident angle of 79 degrees. At what angles are the red (660 nm) and violet (410 nm) parts of the light refracted? The difference between the angles of refraction of two colors is_______ degrees.

I have solved and gotten 48 degrees for RED and 47 degrees for VIOLET.

Answer #1

Given,

theta1 = 79 deg

we know that

n1 sin(theta1) = n2 sin(theta2)

theta2 = sin^-1 (n1 sin(theta1)/n2)

theta2 = sin^-1 (1 x sin79/1.331) = 47.52 deg

theta2' = sin^-1(1 x sin79/1.342) = 47.01 deg

Hence, theta2-red = 47.52 deg ; theta2-violet = 47.01 deg

difference = 47.52 - 47.01 = 0.51 deg

Hence, difference = 0.51 deg

    A beam of white light is incident on the surface of a diamond at an angle θa. (Figure 1) Since the index of refraction depends on the light's wavelength, the different colors that comprise white light will spread out as they pass through the diamond. For example, the indices of refraction in diamond are nred=2.410 for red light and nblue=2.450 for blue light. Thus, blue light and red light are refracted at different angles inside the diamond, as shown in...
