Suppose you work for Coca Cola and are assigned to test new sodas they are developing: Lemon Libation and Grapefruit Guzzle. Specifically, you want to find out if adults aged 18 -34 prefer one over the other. You have fifty volunteers at your laboratory who can stay for one hour to taste the sodas and give you their feedback on preference. Describe how you will use the volunteers and get their feedback on which is the better soda (200 words maximum). Here are some key things to think about as you describe your experiment. Will you block by gender or other attribute? Will you give the volunteers the sodas in the cans? Will everyone taste both sodas? If so, will everyone taste Lemon Libation first? How will you compare the results?

Answer #1

Dependent variable: Choice of the volunteers' taste of the sodas

Independent variables: Lemon libation and Grapefruit Guzzle

Reserch question: Find out the preferences of the adults's choice of soda, aged 18-34 years

Population : All the US adults aged 18-34 years

Sample: 50 volunteers( this is an convenience sample, it may not represent the target population. The sample is biased)

Process: Each volunteer stays one hours to taste the sodas and gives his choice of preference.

The experimental unit is the taste of the two different sodas. Research question is which one is preferred by most of the customers. We have a sample of fifty volunteers. All the 50 volunteers tasted both the sodas and given the feedback. First of all the name of the soda tasted by the volunteers unknown to them, they are two different sodas for their preference of one over another. Then all the fifty responses studied with a contingency table to understand the proportion of the volunteers who preferred lemon libation than Grapefruit gauzzle. Here we will analyse the possible scenarios where out findings might go wrong. First of all the 50 volunteer samples will have a mix of male and female. This makes sense to block the volunteers into two groups to study the proportion of males and females over their preference of one soda against other. Still the results are favourable about the taste of lemon over grapefruit. So the male and female related biases are nullified by blocking the factor into two levels. If i give the sodas in the cans without the labels, for the name of the soda will influence the volunteers, so the results will be biased. So, i will pour the sodas in a coloured glasses so that the actual colour of the sodas will be visible to the volunteers. So the bias infavour of the names can be eliminated. It is a must for the volunteers to taste both the sodas, or else the soda they tasted will go in favour or against the research question. Instead of given the lemon first, let us randomize the two different sodas, and give it to the volunteers. The volunteers will never know which one they will get first, so the blind about the type of soda and taste or type of the soda is mixed up and selected randomly. Like that each one of the 50 volunteers are requested to taste the randomized two glasses of sodas, and asked them to mark the better one. Each one prepares a list of atleast 30 likes or dislikes of the set of two randomized sodas, We will the sample proportions of the 50 volunteers, the mean of the proportions will tell us the actual preference of the volunteers in this type of experiment.
