Meet Jarod Kockrell mmediately after birth, it was noticed that Jarod had a larger than normal head size relative to his body and a bulge in his lower back. From reviewing the medical history of the mother, it reflects that during pregnancy she was not taking folic acid supplements, did not have an ultrasound, amniocentesis (testing the fluid around the fetus), or alpha-fetoprotein test performed. The newborn weighs 7.5 lbs. and is 20 inches in length His vital signs are: Temperature: 98.6° F Pulse: 144 beats/minute Respirations: 40 breaths/minute

He has a bulging fontanel (soft spot on the skull) and a high-pitched cry. His head circumference is 15.8 inches, and his chest circumference is 13.4 inches. The head circumference of a normal neonate is within 1 inch of the chest circumference; Jerod's is 2.4 inches larger than his chest. In the lumbar region of his spine, a sac- like projection is noted.
