Advantages of abstinence only education is that it can delay the sexual encounters in teenagers and other population. It forms knowledge base for sexual education.
Disadvantages of abstinence only education is that it does not provide information on safe sexual practices like avoiding multiple partners, use of barier methods. It does not educate people about STD and their harmful effects.
In some cultures use of barier methids and contraception may not be accepted and seen as inappropriate. Abstinence becomes a safe practice in such situations.
