NH HO (1) 2. A 0.0010 Maqueous solutions of each of the substances below was prepared. Which of these solutions will have a 8 I think the answer that we discussed in class for this problem was D but I do not know why. What indications should I be looking at to determine that the pH range of these substances?

Yes, option D is correct.

First of all, compounds 1 and 5 are highly basic due to presence of the amine groups which have the nitrogen atom from where a lone pair that can be donated.

Compound 3 has a amide group(NH2-C=O), is also basic but not as basic as amines. This is because the amine(-NH2) group is bonded with a carbonyl group(in the amide group); and due to the high electronegativity of oxygen, the NH2 group is involved in resonance with it, and thus the lone pairs on the NH2 are not readily available for donation. This makes it less basic than a simple amine(-NH2) group.

Compound 2 is acidic because it has a carboxylic acid group, which has a highly stable lewis base with a stable resonance structure.

Compound 4 is mildly acidic because it has an OH- group, where the H on the OH group is weakly acidic because the strongly electronegative oxygen pulls electron density away from the H, making it more like an H+ ion.
