Week 4 Discussion Question: The value of training All Sections Schedule One day, Dave Palm, the director of training at LensCrafters, got a call suggesting thait top executives were looking to improve the companys bottiom line and couldnt find enough tangible evidence that the companys training programs were producing a measurable return on the companys investment. Top management at this optical retailer understood that employee training was important buit they wanted to know what evidence was available to show that there was in fact a payoff to the organization from the money being spent on training. The phone conversation ended with a challenge, What are you going to do about this If you were the director of training in this situation, what types of measures would you like to have available before you respond to top management? That is what types of evidence do you think management would find convincing that training was having a positive impact on the organization? Why did you pick the measures that you did? Answer #1

The management would find tangible evidence convincing with regards to training and its positive impact on the company’s bottomline and profitability. The tangible evidence will be presented to them in the form of return on investments from training, increase in productivity and output rates due to training, increase in sales volume due to training, reduction in customer complaints due to training, and increase in customer retention rates due to training.

I have picked the above mentioned measures because these measures will amplify, in a quantitative manner, the positive impact of training. For instance return on investment is a measure of the monetary benefits that are obtained by an organization over a period of time and this benefit accrues to it due to the investment that it had made for training its employees. This will show the management that output from training generally exceeds the inputs.

To collect data I will have to determine the costs associated with the training and the benefits that is accruing to the organization due to the training. The costs and benefits data can be obtained from the HR department which finalizes the training and the finance and accounts department which stores all costs and revenue related information. For certain metrics like increase in productivity I can obtain data from the operations department and compare the data before the training and after the training to demonstrate the positive impact of training.
