Determine which polymerization mechanism(s), i.e. radical, anionic, and cationic, can be used for the following monomers. Briefly explain your answer.

Solution:

1) CH2=CHCl :

Vinyl chloride undergo free radical polymerization to produce poly vinyl chloride polymer. Therefore, more suitable mechanism is free radical polymerization.

2) CH2 = CHCN

Vinyl cyanide undergoes anionic polymerization more frequently due to presence of strong electron withdrawing CN group.

3) CH2=C(CN)2

Due to presence of two electron withdrawing groups (CN), above monomer form polymer via, anionic polymerization.
