Question

You have the following data T2 T3 and the true DGP is: Your friend calculated two estimates of ^: ^1- 1 and B2 2 (a) Find the sum of squared residuals for A1. (hint: you should get an actual number) ind the sum of squared residuals for ß2. (hint: you should get an actual number) (c) Which one of these two estimates is more likely to be the OLS estimate of 3? Why? (d) Find the estimate of β that has the smallest sum of squared residuals

Answer #1

(a)

For ー1 , the estimated equation is, y = x

The estimated y from x are 1, 6, 4

Residuals are (2 - 1) , (6 - 6) , (8 -4)

Sum of squared residuals for β1 is,

(2 - 1)2 + (6 - 6)2 + (8 -4)2 = 17

(b)

For ー2 , the estimated equation is, y = 2x

The estimated y from x are 2, 12, 8

Residuals are (2 - 2) , (6 - 12) , (8 -8)

Sum of squared residuals for β2 is,

(2 - 2)2 + (6 - 12)2 + (8 -8)2 = 36

(c)

Since the sum of squared residuals for β1 is less than that of β2,  β1 is more likely to be the OLS estimate of eta.

(d)

For the smallest sum of squared residuals, eta is, given as,

Tiyi 126 6 +48 70 12+02 + 42-53-1320755

For this exercise we will run a regression using Swiss demographic data from around 1888. The sample is a cross-section of French speaking counties in Switzerland This data come with the R package datasets. The first step is to load the package into your current environment by typing the command libraryldatasets) in to the R console. This loads a number of datasets including one called swiss. Question 4 (10 marks) When analysing the complexity of algorithms, there are three main approaches: worst case, best case and average case. As an example, consider measuring the complexity of list-merging by counting the number of comparisons used As a test example, assume the following A1: There are two ordered lists, each of length 4, say A2: Neither list contains repeats, so a! < a2 < аз < a4 and bl <b2 < b3 < b4 A3: The lists are...

Based on that result, use the relative frequency approach to estimate the probability of getting a 7 when two dice are rolled. Compare this probability to the true probability and also compare this probability to your estimated probability in #1 when you rolled the dice 1000 times. What do you think...
