The formula used to calculate osmolarity is shown below:

Osmolarity nxMolarity each solute

Here n is number of particles that dissociated from solute particle.

KCl dissociates into two ions K+ and Cl-. MgCl2 dissociates into three ions Mg2+ and Cl-. Therefore, n for KCl is 2 and n for MgCl2 is 3.

The osmolarity is calculated as shown below:

Osmolarity ((2x0.5 M)+(3x0.2 M)) -1+0.6 osmol/L =1.6 osmol/L
