Michael is a 17-year-old high school football player who has recently been doing “two a day” practices in preparation for the upcoming season. He is in good physical condition at 5 feet 10 inches and 165 pounds. He is attempting to gain weight, so he has increased his intake of protein foods and estimates he eats approximately 3500 kcalories a day. One particularly hot afternoon, Michael is sweating profusely and begins to feel weak and has a difficult time keeping up with his usual practice routines. Noticing that his face is visibly flushed, his coach has him sit out of practice. Michael reports having eaten 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, 3 ounces of potato chips, and a 12 ounce can of soda for lunch about 2 hours before practice. He had a breakfast burrito with eggs and cheese for breakfast with a 12-ounce glass of orange juice.
1. Along with water, what essential nutrients has Michael’s body most likely lost as result of his heavy sweating? (5 points)
2. What food groups appear to be deficient in Michael’s usual diet? What essential nutrients are likely to be lacking as a result of his limited diet? (5 points)
3. Using information in this chapter and the simplified point system given in the textbook, estimate Michael’s calcium intake. Is this adequate for his age? If not, what recommendations for increasing his calcium intake would you offer? (10 points) The 15th edition of our textbook does not contain an important piece of info for the case study - namely estimating calcium intake based on a point system, so here is what you do:
1. The number of calcium points needed by the male athlete is 4
2. Use the following guide to estimate calcium points
* 1 cup milk, yogurt, fortified soy or 1.5 ounces of cheese = 1 point
* 4 ounces of canned fish with bones = 1 point
* 1 cup ice cream, cottage cheese or calcium-rich veggies like bok choy, cauliflower, kale, broccoli or mustard greens = 1 point
* A well-balanced diet with plenty of servings of fruits, veggies, grains, milk (like lasagne, ham and cheese sandwich, mixed veggies in a salad) = 1 additional point
3. Add up the points from his diet to see if he met at least 4 points. If not, give food suggestions to improve his calcium intake.

Sweating is the bodily function that helps the human body to maintain the temperature homestasis, it is also known as perspiration. This is an important phenomenon for the human physiology but excessive sweating can be worry some.

In this case Michael is profusly sweating and this condition results in loss of water in high amount. Along with water some important electro;lytes are also lost in high amount due to heavy sweating. These nutrients include- sodium, chloride, calcium, potasium and magnesium.

Thus, heavy sweating leads to loss of essential electrolytes and nutrients from human body.
