Jake gave Christina a cell phone for her birthday last month; he calls or texts her constantly. At first, she is flattered by Jake's attention and thought it was romantic. He never leaves her alone when they are out with friends. He becomes angry with her when she goes out alone with friends. Christina is concerned and remembers a program given by the school on teen dating abuse, Christina visits the school nurse and describes her relationship with Jake. The nurse does an assessment. Dating violence is a serious public health problem in the United States. It can have a negative effect on health throughout life. Teens who are victims of dating abuse (emotional, physical, sexual) are more likely to do poorly in school. They may also participate in unhealthy behaviors, such as drug and alcohol use.
