Karen is a 15-year-old girl who experienced head trauma after being in a car accident. She is a junior in high school and was involved in many social events, participated in cross country and track, and did well in school. She hoped to attend college to study social work.

Given the philosophy and values of occupational therapy, what types of things would you consider when working with Karen in occupational therapy that promote therapeutic relationships? Consider the following:

  • What is the goal of occupational therapy? Improving the karens quality of life so she can return to her previous activities (occupation).

  • How do occupational therapy practitioners help clients reach their goals?by helping the client to adapt and learn to increase their independence.

  • What types of activities are motivating to clients? Occupation that are give meaning and identity.

  • In what areas of functioning are OT practitioners interested? They are interested in occupational performance ( the ability to cary out activities of daily life)

  • What types of occupations might Karen want to pursue? Her education, her track and her social activities.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy help the individual do the activity of daily living including occupation which refers all the activities that occupy people time and giving meaning if our lives.

Philosophy

Occupational therapy focused on occupation which facilitate health and promote growth, change and adaptation by improving performance.

Goal

The ultimate aim is focus achievement of health, well being and participation in life through engagement in occupation.

Occupational therapist identify the personal attributes and behavior of individual to develop healthy therapeutic relationship.

Therapist developed a collaborative relationship with client to understand their experience and desires for intervention. It is used throughout the process honors the contributions of clients along with practitioners

Here karen want social work. It can be achieved by the following :

  • Assess the activity level
  • Identify the physical, emotional and social barriers
  • Choose appropriate activity level
  • help to improve activity of daily living
  • help to improve basic motor function and reasoning abilities and compensate for permanent loss of function.
