Answer #1

Plagiarism refers to the practice of copying someone else’s work, ideas or expressions and representing it as one’s own without giving credit to the original author. In universities or colleges, when a student submits a plagiarized work it is a severe violation of honor code which can result in grave consequences. Hence, it is considered to be academic dishonesty which can result in suspension or even expulsion from the institution. Extreme plagiarism can damage one’s reputation and may also result in imprisonment.

  • Word-for-word plagiarism is the act of copying a passage from an original work without providing quotation marks. Usually word-for-word plagiarism can be confirmed if a passage contains a sequence of 7 or more words from the author’s work which is not quoted and is not properly acknowledged. The copied passage without quotation marks and not identifying the author is hence considered to be word-for-word plagiarism.
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism refers to the act of rephrasing the ideas of the author in one’s own words. In this type of plagiarism, the ideas represented in one’s own work is taken from another source, restated and is not properly acknowledged.

The student version of the given passage is plagiarized.

Hence, third option is incorrect.

The student has not rephrased the passage. He has used his own version in writing the first part of the passage. Thus, it is not paraphrasing plagiarism.

Hence, second option is incorrect.

In the passage given, the student has copied a sequence of word-for-word text from the original source material (“Sage on the stage to a guide on the side, facilitating learning in less directive ways”). In this, quotation marks were not used and credit was not given to the author. Hence, this is word-for-word plagiarism.

Therefore, the correct answer is the first option.
