• VLOOKUP or as used “=vlookup()” is an excel formula function.
• As the name says, it is used to ‘look up’ for a value in a ‘vertical’ instructed way (hence the name ‘V’lookup).
• The formula gives up a value after looking for the same based on the instructions provided within “(..)” of the function.
• Syntax for VLOOKUP is =vlookup(Look up value, Table, Column no.)
• Let’s take a simple example data:
• Important thing to note while using a Vlookup function is that it works ‘vertically’.

For that you need to remember that for the given table able:
--Column ‘B’ Name of Student is #1 column
--Column ‘C’ is #2 column
--Column ‘D’ is #3 column
--Column ‘E’ is #4 column.

This #1, #2, #3 and #4 are required because the vlookup function asks for ‘column number in its syntax.

• Based on the syntax of the VLOOKUP, which is “=vlookup(Look up value, Table, Column no.)”,

--Look up value will be ‘Name of the student’.
--Your motive or the ‘purpose of VlookUp function here, is to enter just the name of student, and all of its marks details gets reflected AUTOMATICALLY

• Here,
  -- B12 will be LookUp Value, and Vlookup function will be used in C12, D12 and E12.

--You see that For English, Finance and Economics, the column no. used is 2, 3 and 4 respectively within the vlookup function.
