  • Power is important organizational behavior in which the ability of an individual or group of individual who influence belief and action of others

  • Formal sources are granted by virtue of its position in the hierarchical structure in the organization. It is legitimate and legal type of power.
  • Informal sources of power created by social interaction.
  • Reward power involve positive sanctions in term of praise, verbal approval, sending memorandum of thanks.
  • Coercive power is negative sanctions in which punishment punishment such as threat if dismissal, suspension, demotion etc.
  • Expert power is occur within person his knowledge, experience and skill.
  • Referent power is attributed to a leader by the subordinate due to her personal traits, personality and based on subordinate's identification with a superior.
  • The manager's behavior based on the type of power. Therefore good manager try to analyses the sources of power and be careful how they use that power. The expert and referent power used by the manager build a commitment among subordinate. Expert power enhance the subordinate committed to work.In this manager act as role model. For example A nurse manager want her employees to be punctual, she can demonstrate those behavior herself and her employees will likely imitate her action. The legitimate and reward power causes compliance, empowerment and stress. If coercive power leads to resistant.

If a manager using reward power, before giving reward must be sure that employee actually job done well.

Using legitimate power nurse manager should be sensitive to subordinate concern otherwise power may be questionable.

Coercive power should be done in private. Public punishment is humilitating.
